Structured around a selection of landmark pieces, the exhibit is representative of Marie-Josée Laframbroise’s creative process and of her conceptual practice since the early 90s.The exhibit is organized into two segments. The first displays, in four installations, the artist’s process. The second, a series of works on paper, showcases the artist’s drawings. Marie-Josée Laframbroise’s installations are characterized by the way that they inhabit their spaces. The effect is reinforced both by Laframbroise’s choice of materials as well as her dexterous manner of manipulating fibre throughout a given space.Woven, braided, piled, knotted, rolled and stretched, Laframbroise’s ingenious constructions – as immaterial as they are overwhelming – transform their surroundings all the while shifting the viewer’s attention to those architectural elements that might escape us day to day. In addition to pushing boundaries of spatial appropriation and reticular systems with her installations, Laframbroise has consistently pursued drawing. Much more than mere sketches or preparatory studies, Laframbroise’s drawings are exhibited in order to complement her installations, and are a virtual means of pushing the tangible and concrete limits of space. Originally from Quebec City,Marie-Josée Laframbroise obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal. She has been exhibiting professionally since 1992.As well has having been invited to participate in a number of exhibits throughout the country, she has shown her work in France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria in collective exhibits, residences and symposiums.Marie-Josée Laframbroise lives and works in Montreal. Eve-Lyne Beaudry, curator of contemporary art at the Musée d’art de Joliette since April 2009, officiates the second tier of the retrospective project. A catalogue, co-produced with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge, Alberta, will be published following the exhibition. |
