The exhibition Mark Ruwedel: Written on the Land featured 106 works produced in 1991 and 2002 by the American-born photographer Mark Ruwedel. The photographs are drawn from three series which, when brought together, are unified by their place of origin—the American West.. The exhibition is structured around a central theme: the impact of technology and culture on North American natural landscapes. The transformation of nature by human beings—often resulting in its devastation—lies at the heart of the artist’s work. As a witness to human activity, the landscape becomes a revealer of American history.
Produced by the Presentation House Gallery in Vancouver and organized by curator Karen Love, the exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue. Its presentation at the Musée d’art de Joliette was made possible through the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
