Pierre Ayot
Femmes de toilette

Pierre Ayot’s playful installation Femmes de toilette (1979–80) is on exhibit at the Musée d’art de Joliette (MAJ), from October 8, 2016 to April 30, 2017, in the third-floor women’s washroom. Through this artwork, recently acquired by the MAJ, Ayot revisits the process of representation of trompe-l’oeil, a recurrent theme in his approach, in an unusual setting. The artist, who has previously used this visual stratagem in many of his works, invites spectators to spy on a conversation between two women. Composed of a soundtrack, everyday objects, and a specific setting, Femmes de toilette is integrated into the spectators’ environment, thus raising questions about visual and auditory representations as well as the placement and meaning of artworks.
