André Breton, the father of surrealism, used “naïve” to describe the work of Henri “Douanier” Rousseau. Ever since, the word has been applied to art that stands outside the major artistic movements. Autodidact [Autodidact] is a survey of naïve works in the MAJ’s permanent collection, including paintings by Blanche Bolduc (1907-1998), Simone Mary Bouchard (1912-1945), Édith Bouchard (1924-2009) and Arthur Villeneuve (1910-1990).
