The Miseries and Misfortunes of War

The Miseries and Misfortunes of War is one of the most influential series of prints produced in the 17th century. Published in 1633, the 18 etchings are not only a powerful demonstration of Jacques Callot’s remarkable mastery of light and shadow, but also an important document bearing witness to the tragic events of the Thirty Year War (1618-1648).

The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos

This exhibition prensents two of Goya’s most important series of prints. A record and a condemnation of the the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and the famine that followed during the second reign of Ferdinand VII at the end of the 18th century, these outstanding works, deal in very direct fashion with war, violence, injustice, and human folly.

Small Chronicles of Everyday Violence

The works in this exhibition are a fascinating mix of drawings and collages inspired by the artist’s meditation on the suffering, both physical and mental, that is caused by violence. Violated, crippled and humiliated figures, represented with very few details, conjure up deceit, slyness and the irreparable damage inflicted by certain acts. Jodoin’s frank and brutal creations are small, but dramatic chronicles that poignantly bear witness to the human condition.

La jetée

La jetée (1962) is a science-fiction short by the French filmmaker Chris Marker. Recognized as one of the masterpieces of world cinema, the film is a succession of still shots accompanied by a voice-over narration that conveys the author’s profound sensitivity to questions of time and human memory. In this truly remarkable experimental work, one of Marker’s most admirable films, the filmmaker breaks with filmic conventions producing one of the most original films in the history of the movies.
