About —
Lyne Lapointe’s Cabinet series was commissioned by the Société des médecins de l’Université de Sherbrooke in 2008. Dealing playfully with scientific, medical, botanical, geological and even zoological concepts, the artist draws her inspiration for the work from the German Expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) with its painted stylized sets, distorted perspective and strange buildings and from the cabinets of curiosities of the 18th century, the forerunners of the modern museum. This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Société des médecins de l’Université de Sherbrooke.
Like a ”Pandora’s Box”, the piece releases a world of surprising discoveries and encounters to be contemplated, imagined and reflected upon. Fascinated by the vibrant colours of the wings of a butterfly, captivated by the delicate nature of an embroidery stitch, inspired by the expressiveness of a shape, Lyne Lapointe recycles, mixes and assembles creating a world that affords the viewer an intense visual experience. The exhibition is also the subject of a publication by curator and art historian Marie-France Beaudoin, available at the Musée d’art de Joliette.
