About —

Another City offers an artistic dialogue between Canada and Japan through an interdisciplinary exhibition that allies the visual arts to architecture and literature. This unusual project brings together works by artists Paul de Guzman (Vancouver), Yoshihiro Suda (Japan) and author and art critic Masashi Ogura (Japan) to interact in the same space. All three participants are interested in the theme of the changing urban environment.

The exhibition is presented in the form of a labyrinthine architectural installation that incorporates sculptures of native plants representing Canada’s biodiversity. Visitors are invited to stroll around inside the structure and discover spaces that reflect the rapid development of urban landscapes, mirroring the constantly changing lifestyles of our cities. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a limited-issue box set, produced in collaboration with the MAJ, and containing a DVD, postcards and a publication featuring, among other texts, three essays authored by Masashi Ogura, John Atkin and Gary McFarlane.

The travelling exhibition Another City is organized and toured by Centre A, theVancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, and mounted by Makiko Hara, chief curator of the Centre. This project was made possible through support from Canadian Heritage’s Museums Assistance Program and with the assistance of the Japan-Canada Fund, a gift from the Government of Japan to the Canada Council for the Arts. Artist Paul de Guzman is represented by the Birch Libralato Gallery of Toronto and artist Yoshihiro Suda by Galerie René Blouin in Montreal and the Koyanagi Gallery in Tokyo.
